Discover the Crop to Cup Experience

Updated: Jul 27, 2023

Process of Coffee

Are you a coffee enthusiast who's ever found yourself cradling a warm cup, staring at the frothy, steaming top and wondering about its origin? If so, buckle up for a fascinating journey that will take us from lush coffee plantations in Colombia to your very own coffee cup. Let's delve into the extraordinary world of coffee production - from crop to cup!

Start of the Journey: Cultivation

Everything begins in the coffee fields of Colombia, where our resilient coffee farmers are hard at work. They patiently cultivate and nourish Coffea plants, typically in regions of high altitude where the soil is rich and the climate is conducive to coffee growing. The farmers carefully tend to these plants, ensuring they receive just the right amount of sunlight and rain.

After approximately three to four years, these coffee plants start producing cherries. Yes, cherries! Your coffee begins its life as a fruit, and within these cherries are the precious coffee beans.

The Harvest

Harvest time is crucial. Coffee cherries don't all ripen at the same pace, so it's crucial to handpick only the ripe ones. This is a labor-intensive process, but essential to ensure the highest quality beans. Imagine the hands that patiently pluck these cherries, one by one. It's a labor of love, and it's what sets the foundation for your fantastic coffee experience.

Processing the Beans

Once harvested, the coffee cherries are depulped, a process that removes the outer skin and pulp, leaving behind the coffee bean. These beans then undergo fermentation, a natural process where sugars transform into acids, giving coffee its distinctive flavor profile. After fermentation, the beans are washed and dried.

Roasting Magic

The dried green coffee beans are now transported to our roasting facility in New York. Here, we use precise heat and time controls to transform these green beans into the brown, aromatic ones you're familiar with. Roasting is an art in itself, as different temperatures and roast durations create a variety of flavor profiles. Light roast, medium roast, dark roast - each has its unique flavor nuances!

Grinding and Brewing

Next, the roasted beans are ground. The grind size plays a key role in determining the taste of your coffee, as it influences the extraction process. Too fine a grind can result in over-extraction and a bitter taste, while too coarse a grind can lead to under-extraction and a weak flavor.

Now comes the brewing - the final step before you can savor your coffee. There are numerous brewing methods to choose from - pour-over, French press, espresso - each adding its unique touch to your coffee experience.

Voila, Your Cup of Coffee!

And there you have it! Your perfectly brewed cup of coffee has been on an incredible journey, from the crop to your cup. It's a complex process involving numerous people and various stages of production - all of which contribute to that comforting, invigorating aroma that greets you each morning.

So the next time you take a sip of your coffee, take a moment to appreciate the journey it's been on. The dedication, hard work, and precision that go into every step. The journey from crop to cup is a remarkable one, a testament to the passion and commitment of everyone involved in the process. It's the story behind your cup of coffee. And isn't that story fascinating?

It's this journey that we at Try Just Coffee are passionate about sharing with you. Because understanding your coffee's voyage deepens your appreciation of that humble cup, and hopefully, it also enhances your enjoyment of every sip you take.
